I went to Kinko's to make some copies, and a new employee (her first day at the Lakewood Kinkos--she used to work at the one in Olympia) was helping me with my laminating, and also keeping an eye on my kids. She mentioned to me that she had seven children. "Wow, that's great," I replied. "Yes it is," she said. She went on to tell me that she loved having that many kids because they have so much fun together, and she also said that it gets easier when the kids get older (the older ones take care of the younger ones--she said this as she helped Roger pull his fingers out of the vending machine). Somehow Sam's residency came up, and she told me that her ex-husband was a neonatal doctor in the Military (I later learned that he worked at Madigan, and that he had gone to USUHS--just like Sam). She then mentioned to me that some of her kids had Cystic Fibrosis. Suddenly a lightbulb went on. "Don't you have 3 kids with CF?" I asked. "We actually have five," she replied. "I know who you are!" I stated, "Your ex-husband spoke at USUHS about your family, and my husband told me about it!" "I used to help him with those presentations," she said. What a small world.
I remember Sam telling me about this family. Her ex-husband held up a picture of his whole family and asked, "Which ones do you think we should get rid of? (or something to that effect)" His point was that many people feel they should abort babies who are diagnosed with CF before being born, and he felt strongly that abortion was a mistake. He asked them to point out which kids had CF. It was impossible to tell. He loved all his children, and wouldn't get rid of any of them.
My new friend Deborah said that even though she is divorced, they are still friends, and they all spend a lot of time together as a family.
