Hard Drive Crash & Answer to Prayers

I have been avoiding my computer for almost a week. We bought a new 1 TB (1000 GB) external hard drive a couple weeks ago, and I transferred ALL of my photos, digital scrapbook pages, scrapbooking elements, etc. . . onto the new drive. We like to buy new hard drives once in a while to make sure we have a good hard drive for storing our most precious memories. Well, in less than two days the new hard drive crashed. It would not allow me to access ANY of my photos. The thought of possibly losing all that work felt almost as bad as losing someone close to me. I did have most of it backed up, but because of personal things I was dealing with at the time, I didn't get my pictures backed up for about 8 months. I only had the pictures I posted on the blog, and I only had some of my scrapbook pages backed up as jpegs. Needless to say, I lost a lot of sleep. I sort of ignored the problem until Saturday night. Then I realized I may have lost everything. So I decided to exercise some faith, and I fasted and PRAYED that everything would work out. At one point, I had to ask Sam to give me a blessing of comfort (in the middle of the night) because I couldn't sleep. Anyways, on Monday, I felt relatively calm that things would work out. I started looking into data recovery programs, and felt that my best bet would be to retrieve the deleted files off the old hard drive. My feelings were confirmed later when a tech support guy (after explaining my situation) said it would probably be impossible to retrieve the data from the new hard drive. So yesterday I bought a data recovery program and was able to retrieve all (and then some more--almost 90,000 pictures) from the old hard drive. Granted, they were all assigned a new name, and were divided by file type, but they are all there. Now I will start the ardurous task of sorting, organizing, and filing all my photos (and deleting a few, too), but I am soooooo happy that I got them all back, I don't care about organizing them. I may actually look into Adobe Bridge or Lightroom to do all my organizing. I've been thinking about it for a while anyways. I am so grateful that my prayers were answered. I know to some it may seem trivial, but preserving memories is something that has always been important to me. I know I wouldn't have been able to remain calm without the help of a higher source. So today I am filled with gratitude that God does hear and answer our prayers, even if the problem may seem trivial to some. And yes, I am going to be looking for alternate ways to store my photos.

What program did you use? I used klix a whie ago--recommended by the people at Apple help. It worked for me, but I was only retrieving off my memory card.

It wasn't a mac issue. It was one of our external hard drives. I guess it was a faulty one. I just downloaded a couple of demos of disk recovery programs, and one of them showed that my pictures were there, so I bought that one (filesalvage.com). It was also the cheaper one, thank goodness. I would use carbonite.com, but they don't have it available for macs yet. But when they do, I'll be one of the first ones to buy their service.

I was going to suggest carbonite! SORRY, we have had numerous hard drive crashes some have been recoverable. I have a friend who just takes my computer to his work, that is what they do! It was really nice. I still need them to get into some password protected files that I can't get into. Glad to hear that you got your photos back, good luck organizing them!

ahhh--I feel your pain. That happened to me this past April. I thought I had lost all my photos and preschool curriculum I had spent the past year developing. Fortunately one of my parents was able to help me retrieve everything--again an answer to prayers.
