It's always cold here where I live. We're lucky if we have two weeks out of the summer with warm weather. In an attempt to warm up my house a little, and save on the ever-increasing energy costs, I decided to get down in the crawl space under my house and secure the insulation so it fits snug on the underside of the floor. I bought these long metal "stay rods" from an insulation company, and my dad and I pushed them up between the trusses. It wasn't too complicated (in theory), but the next day I felt like I had been in a fight. I had a huge bruise on my knee from crawling around on chunks of cement (OUCH!), and a rash formed (from the fiberglass insulation) on the unprotected skin of my forehead and cheeks. I cover it up with makeup, so nobody can see, and avoid itching it. I have to say, it's not as scary down under the house as one might think. We keep our food storage there. Stuart had fun as the "messenger boy." He would fetch things (like lightbulbs) so we wouldn't have to emerge from under the house every time we needed something.
I have to say that I am soooooo thankful for my parent's help. My dad is twice my age, and has more energy and ability than myself. Besides helping me with the insulation, he fixed my faucet, installed my new food disposer, installed a new towel rack in the kids' bathroom, tightened up all the toilet paper holders in the bathrooms (they were all falling off), fixed a couple thresholds, cleaned my garage, and helped some friends move into their house. He eliminated tons of "to-do's" off my list. He has a hard time sitting still. Hmm. . . I must have got that from him. My mom was a great help, too. She washed mountains of laundry, ironed clothes (Sam is so spoiled--I never iron anything except Sunday clothes), and took care of the kids. She actually succeeded in getting Roger down for naps, too. My parents were such a big help, and made my life so much easier for a time. Mom and dad, thanks for all you do.
